George D. Gopen
Dr. George Gopen, the creator of the groundbreaking writing curriculum known as the Reader Expectation Approach, is considered the leading writing consultant on the English Language. Dr. Gopen is Professor Emeritus of the Practice of Rhetoric at Duke University, where he founded the University Writing Program (1985), taught full-time in the English Department (1985-2012), and part-time in the School of Law (1994-2010). From 1980 to 1990, Dr. Gopen was a partner in the writing consultancy Clearlines — together with University of Chicago English professors, Joseph Williams, Gregory Colomb, and Frank Kinahan. Since 1990, he has expanded the work begun by Clearlines into a full realization of his Reader Expectation Approach. Dr. Gopen has authored five books and more than 67 articles on literary analysis, rhetorical analysis, music, pedagogy, and writing of all kinds, including legal, scientific, and mathematical. He has published a number of book reviews and has delivered more than 100 conference presentations.

After graduating from the venerable Roxbury Latin School, Dr. Gopen studied English and American literature at Brandeis University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. He spent his junior year abroad at the University of Reading, Berkshire, England. He achieved his J.D. from the Harvard Law School and his Ph.D. in English, from the Harvard Graduate School of the Arts and Sciences, simultaneously.
He currently resides in Durham, N.C. where he serves as the Director of the Chamber Arts Society and sings with the Choral Society of Durham.
